If one were to take at face value the assertions made by Republican representatives Andy Ogles and Brandon Gill, one might conclude that four million American Muslims are completely radicalized, predisposed to violence, and incapable of integrating into society. Indeed, in March, Ogles claimed that “Muslims don’t belong in American society.” Around the same period, Gill warned that “Importing Islam will annihilate America as we know it.” While it is true that some individuals within the American Muslim community experience radicalization, the broad claim of total unassimilability is false and exposes American Muslims to heightened risk of violence.
