New York City has already declared the city’s municipal grocery experiment a success even before any store opens, with City Hall insisting its initiative “will prove” that government can make food more affordable through the “efficient use of public resources.” But although Mayor Zohran Mamdani campaigned on city-owned stores, the administration now prefers private grocers to operate them—and to disclose what taxpayers will pay to render its fantasyland model “work.” Apparently, the first rule of municipal socialism is to invite profit-seeking grocers to explain how grocery stores operate.
