The origin of the name remains uncertain. Oregon, to be specific. There are many theories, indeed a couple dozen. Perhaps the syllables began as something from one of the many Native languages, or from Spanish, or Portuguese, or perhaps it was the result of a blunder on a French map. Maybe it traces back to “Ouragan,” the mythical river of the West, or perhaps it concerns the wind, or the waterfalls, or oregano (yes, the herb), which the conquistadors encountered to the south as they moved along the coastline, attempting to plant flags in whatever they touched.
