In January 2024, the University of Michigan secured college football’s national championship with a squad largely built from players developed on campus. The roster did include a few transfers—the kicker, an additional tight end behind the starter, and several players on defense—but the majority of the standout performers had joined Michigan as freshmen. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum, and defensive back Mike Sainristil were familiar names, having either already committed to Michigan or been part of the program during its pandemic-shortened 2020 season, a year when the Wolverines finished 2-4.
